An Update from Wilcox Writing

Another week, another opportunity to practice and improve your writing. We also have an update for you!

Here’s a two-minute writing exercise: Think about one recent experience that was salient, memorable, or valuable to you. It doesn’t matter whether it was good or bad. Any experience that comes to the surface is suitable. Meditate on it for a moment, to make it fresh in your mind and body. Let those feelings come back. Push out all distractions from your mind for just two minutes.

Take out a notepad and pencil or open a word processor and write for two minutes without removing the pencil from the paper or your fingers from the keys.

Don’t think about writing—just write.

This is freewriting, a way to get started on writing. Then you can think about what you wrote and make it go places. Writing that starts from authentic experiences can be some of the most valuable forms of writing and reading material.

Take a breath. Come back to us, because we have some exciting news for you!

We recently added three (yes three!) new writing learning documents to our Writing Center.

The document “Revising for Clarity” shows how to revise and edit a document for clarity. It discusses some of the common issues in writing that can make writing unclear, like (my most-hated) ambiguous pronoun references.

“Identifying Main Sentences” discusses the five grammatically complete basic sentence structures in the English language (Yes, really, only five! I was surprised to learn this too). It shows how to identify those main sentences and why doing so is important. Did you know that not every grammatically complete English sentence needs a subject, a verb, and an object?

Finally, “Things to consider before writing” discusses how considering factors like purpose, audience, medium, and topic are important, even before writing a single word. We need to think about who is reading what we write and how they engage with the form (or medium) that the writing is expressed in.

Our purpose with the Writing Center is to make learning about writing free and accessible. We offer free writing documents, PowerPoint lessons, and internet resources in our Writing Center, and we also offer (paid) one-on-one writing tutoring.

As always, you can gain access to our Writing Center for free. All we ask is that you subscribe to our blog and newsletter (wilcoxwriting.ca/blog). Once you subscribe, you will receive an email with a link to the Writing Center.

Psst: Here’s a little secret. (We are also thinking about making instructional videos for those who have a shorter reading attention span, stay tuned! Producing these resources takes a lot of time, energy, and work.)

WILCOX WRITING offers copywriting, editing, and personalized writing tutoring services. Don’t be shy to contact us on our website for any of our services. We’re here to help you bring your best word forward! Subscribing to this newsletter also gives you access to our Writing Center, full of free writing learning documents and resources.
