Are You a Writer?

Everyone is a writer. If you went to grade school and can put pen to paper, you can write. Hence, you’re a writer, Harry! 🧙

A writer is someone who writes, and writing is making intelligible ideas through the symbols of a language. This is something anyone can do. We write all the time: emails, job applications, text messages, to-do lists, reminders, etc.

Some writing may be more crude, some may be more refined. Different writings have different purposes. Unless you didn’t go through grade school, everyone is a writer.

Some worry about whether or not they can write. This is the biggest obstacle to writing. “I don’t think I’m a good writer, so I won’t write.” It’s the story of the unfit person avoiding going to the gym and getting fit simply because they aren’t fit. Yet, (barring injuries or physical disabilities) they can still walk on a treadmill or lift a two pound weight. So it is also with writing.

It’s important to note, though, that good writing takes practice. Good writing takes time. Good writing is hard. (One reason why I offer my writing services!)

Not everyone is a good writer, but everyone can be good. Being a good writer takes practice. (We’re always here to help.)

Practicing writing is as simple as booting up a word processor, or getting a pen and paper, and putting words to paper. How are you feeling now? What happened to you today? Is there something on your mind? Let your thoughts flow into the movements of your hand. You’re doing it, you’re writing!

The words may not make complete sense or be the clearest to another reader, but revising can come later. Writing need not all be professional publishable content (I myself have so many inscrutable scribbles as virtual notes that probably will never be publicly published). The important thing is that you’re writing, which means you’re a writer.

So, go forth and write!
